NetHack Architecture
The original game was a single map divided into 256×256 square cells. The player took the role of a character who moved in a pseudo-turn based fashion from cell to cell. A moving character could move up to three squares at a time. The moves could be modified as to form a character with various abilities.
In August of 1989 a modern game was released, it was divided into three separate maps that were linked into a non-linear, continuous path. The player had the ability to change weapons and armor as they went along. The third game, NetHack3.5 was released in September of 1999 and included multiple skill trees and new options like additional hit points.
