Let me say it from the start: I’m not buying Microsoft’s latest console, the Xbox 360. This machine will go the way of the first-generation PlayStation 2, which, despite being far better than the first PlayStation console, barely sold two million units.

Although the Xbox 360 is a perfectly capable machine, it offers little that the new PlayStation 3 will not. Sony builds a better hardware platform, and apparently knows what the hell it’s doing, which you can’t say of Microsoft.

Part of the problem is the fact that Microsoft’s system only has a handful of decent games, fewer than it takes to fill a single Xbox 360 disk. And I’m being generous with the term “decent,” given how many of those games are lackluster first-person shooters.

Hard games like Portal, Half-Life 2, and old-school classics such as Duke Nukem 3D and Doom offer are no more than a retrograde step from the PlayStation 2 era. And online gaming, which was supposed to be the best reason to buy a 360, is actually worse than the PlayStation 3.

When the PS3 launched, Sony offered a comparison service, allowing online users to “rate” their system. The site, called the XMB, allowed users to go online and play games with other console owners around the world. This was easy because the new console used the same online service as the PlayStation 2.

As Sony was slow to release information on the functionality of its online service, the company’s competitors were quick to fill the void. The Xbox 360 has been online for some time now, but this is not the key component that differentiated it from the first generation of Xboxes. Xbox Live was and is a far inferior experience to the service offered by the Sony PlayStation Network. The new Microsoft service has inferior features, is slower and less reliable than Sony’s service, and takes longer to get your hands on.
