Portable Archon Classic 1.1.8.
The single working toilet of the Student Union Building has long been a symbol of
academic freedom and free speech. Now, it has become a battleground in the ongovernment’s struggle against a global conspiracy to destroy all portable urinals.
But I wasnt very impressed with the Archons tone in the various experimental scenarios. The Lead sounds just OK and completely lacks depth, and I found the rest of the level settings to be pretty inconsistent. The preamp and power sections both sounded solid, but the EQ setting was mushy and distracting. The Bright switch was only really used during hard-rock strums and other repeating passages, but I never heard it effectively blend with the level settings. Im also not too crazy about the amp switching to hold at unity gain at high volumes. It feels sudden and finicky. For such a well-built, no-compromises amp, the lack of a master volume means that the Archon never really gets to meld to my playing and sound. The Archon is certainly a beast that needs some work to get it to sound right, and that has to be my only real complaint. When the Archon does work, its a fantastic little amp for rock and funk.
One of the ways The Archon excels is the unique combination of sustain and well-defined tone that it puts out in conjunction with the EQ settings. For the lead setting, I found the sustain to be rather lacking. The archon does not have much of a clean tone, although it can get surprisingly crunchy. However, in combination with the EQ settings, the Archon really came alive. Placing the Treble at noon, the mids at 4 oclock, and Bass at 9:00 allowed the Archon to chime in during each solo. Throughout my time with the Archon, I used the mid EQ setting as my overall tone control. It allows me to shape my playing style (more modern, more rock, etc) according to what I need. With the Gain boosted, I found the Archon gave me a clean, warm sound that I could sculpt to my preference. Midges and Bo Bice, and I was in heaven.
