Beep was the first prank application to go public. It was created in 1987, and was originally only active between November 1986 and July 1987. Around 1990, the developers redistributed the source code under the GNU GPL. Since then, beep has seen new versions and numerous new features. Beep currently has 67 different commands.
Beep’s “Sed” fork BeepSed is an electronic device that emits high-pitched beeps which can be used for various purposes. BeepSed can be used as a prank device, to quickly indicate system status, or to detect system availability. In some cases, the device is disguised as an alarm clock or iPod docking station, allowing the user to prank a person into reacting to the beep without their knowledge.
Beep can be used to prank the following system events:
· When an application is launched (triggered by typing a program’s name into the terminal, loading an application from disk, or pressing alt+spacebar).
