Here’s a theory that most of the N.G.C. community will immediately say is ridiculous, but is based around all the dates that Super Mario Sunshine hasn’t been re-released. Super Mario Sunshine releases in Japan in April 2003, which is 5 years ago. Super Mario Sunshine re-launching in Japan in April 2018, making it 17 years later. If you look at the Super Mario Sunshine 35th anniversary special in Japan, you’ll see that the release of Super Mario Sunshine was announced that same year too. 13 April 2003. If Super Mario Sunshine was being re-released, surely that special wouldn’t have been released, right? Well no. Super Mario Sunshine got released on the 1st, which is 13 April, 2003. 13 April, 2003. Not even close to 17 years after the game was released. Drop that theory right out.
Nintendo had confirmed that Super Mario Sunshine would receive Japanese re-releases last year. Looks like those plans have finally been put into place. Just as an FYI, they’re doing USA a combined release too. So expect Super Mario Sunshine USA on the 30th of October this year.
Before we look at the date, allow me to point to an interesting tidbit. There are a few references to the date ‘1773’ within the Japanese version, which may indicate an occurence in the game’s storyline. Let’s have a further look at this date. Gangplank dressed as Luigi is on the stage when the date appears on the touch screen. Let’s look at this date in the Tokyo Date Guide 2020 supplement.
“1773” (yarō), on the 4th of this month (NOTE: This is a slight error. There’s no such thing as the 4th of February. So 1773 would actually be the 29th of January 1773), Princess Peach is crowned the Queen of the Mushroom Kingdom.”
