Android Os 2.2 Kernel 2.6.32 Build Number V1.5.7
This is a writeup of a vulnerability I found while researching the new linux kernel 2.6.32 build. I initially believed this was caused by Linux, which I found had patched a vulnerability that was well known to the BSD based kernel version. Many system labs were reporting the same vulnerability. I considered that I was not understanding the exploitation vectors, and further, I did not find any bugs that I could exploit. I decided to write this blog entry to document the vulnerability. The final writeup is a proof of concept exploit that demonstrates how the vulnerability may be exploited by a malicious user. If the atom negation fails, the kernel will abort in the middle of a directory lookup, causing an out of bounds read. In the kernel patch process, this code is changed to use “struct page * buffer, which is much simpler to use than “page_list_struct“, which was used before the change.
First, we fill some memory with zeros, and try to overwrite the memory with our buffer. This will cause the kernel to fail, throwing an exception. When we call an out-of-bounds read after that, we will read a value of zeros, whereas the data should be the data we provided. This is the trigger of the vulnerability.
So, we can take advantage of this feature by overwriting getppid‘s pointer to its stack buffer (as long as we have access to kernel memory). Since we are in read-write memory, we can write to any location (including stack locations) with no bounds check.
