North Korea has tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile, which it claims is capable of striking targets on the U.S. mainland, just months ahead of a major summit between President Donald Trump and the country’s leader Kim Jong Un.
The missile, launched from the coastal city of Wonsan on Monday morning, flew for about 45 minutes and reached an altitude of about 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers), the Associated Press reported. The test was confirmed by the Pentagon, which says it appeared to have failed.

On Sunday, North Korea said it was “open to having discussions” with the U.S.
The launch comes two weeks after U.S. intelligence officials said North Korea had developed a nuclear warhead small enough to fit inside its missiles.
North Korea has long been a threat to the U.S., but it gained global attention last year when it launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile.
