In AutoCAD 2017, Dynamic Components were introduced. Dynamic Components are part of the AutoCAD module, and allow a number of CAD elements to be automatically arranged on a drawing, independent of the type of block. Dynamic Components allow users to quickly arrange blocks to represent such things as:
Line, circle, ellipse, polyline, polygon, spline, text, notes, arcs, rectangles, textboxes, dimensions, blocks, and custom components.
Dynamic Components are available with a number of predefined layouts, which can be selected from the layout tab, or customized by the user. When configured, they can also be used with standard or custom blocks, thereby allowing users to create designs quickly.
A Dynamic Component is a simple list of three items; a data source, a data target, and a transformation. The transformations define the arrangement of the component. The component can either be an AutoCAD block type or can be a user-defined block. Dynamic Components can arrange blocks in any direction, as well as reposition and scale them, using simple drag-and-drop. The element the component is intended to represent is also placed on the drawing. The component remains on the drawing until the user removes it by dragging it to the Component Manager.
When a Dynamic Component is used, the data source is the block that represents the component, and the data target is the block that will receive the component. The data target can be the block the component was dragged from (if it was dragged from a block), or it can be another block that the user can choose in the Component Manager. The transformation is used to position the component on the data target. The type of transformation used is determined by the component’s data type.
A component can be repositioned by placing it at a specific point on the data target. The component can be positioned, scaled, and rotated using a standard set of transformations:
Each component can be assigned a name, icon, and color, as well as a tooltip, which appears when the user hovers over the component.
A Dynamic Component can be applied to any block in the drawing. However, the drawing must be open. For example, a Dynamic Component cannot be used to place a group.
The new Dynamic Components also support drag-and-drop. Dynamic Components can also be used to generate a new design. This process is called Dynamic Blocker. This is similar to the old Freehand.
