The Vermont Senate has heard from about 80 people who are behind a push to legalize medical marijuana.

The panel discussed the proposal Thursday as it continued its work on the issue.

Sen. Phil Baruth, D-Chittenden, asked supporters of the proposal to share their stories. He said many people he’s talked to tell him they are ill and want access to medical marijuana.

“I think there’s clearly need,” he said. “You’ve heard all the stories about people who are going to die if they don’t access the medicine.”

Baruth pointed out he supports the effort and said there are several safeguards that will be included in the measure that would limit access to people who need it.
