The primary differences between the software listed above are in the number of supported Operating Systems, different price points, and their hardware requirements. It is also possible for these software to run multiple different virtual machines on a host, but they don’t list how many, if any. That said, we do recommend trying all of the ones listed, as well as any other software that may be similar, to see which one works for you.

After trying out a few of the listed virtual machines, we did find a few of the programs to work flawlessly, even with a couple of older, unsupported operating systems. They all worked, and you don’t have to go through the hassle of figuring out how to update them. That’s just a bonus.

1. Vbox

The best virtual machine software is probably VBox. VBox is a great program that allows you to run Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, or another operating system using the software’s built-in program. The downside to VBox is that it isn’t free, and it has a reputation for bugs. VBox is owned by the HCLC, and many users have had problems with it. It’s for these reasons that we don’t suggest VBox as the first virtual machine software you try.

2. VirtualBox

VirtualBox is VBox’s more recent iteration of the program. It is still free, and it still allows you to run Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and another operating system. However, the new version has a much better reputation, and it doesn’t include any of the proprietary licensing issues. The downside is that VirtualBox is a bit slow when it comes to processing. It takes longer to boot than some of the other programs, and that’s a very real downside.

3. Parallels

Parallels isn’t free, but it has been recently acquired by Citrix, who makes the Citrix Parallels product for Mac users. Parallels is the best Mac virtual machine software on the market, and it allows you to run Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and another operating system. Its features include a number of pre-installed apps, such as iTunes, iPhoto, and a remote desktop client. It also has a nice multi-monitor support feature, that allows you to manage multiple displays with the software.

4. VMware Workstation

Workstation is another free virtual machine software from VMware. Workstation is a very popular program, and you’ll see it included on most of the other lists. It is an excellent piece of
