Story:

Devolver Bootleg Review

Devolver Bootleg was one of the earlier launch titles for PlayStation Vita and being released in the holiday season it had the miss the mark with many enthusiasts. However, with a title that has been through many revisions and worked on by a large team to correct issues and to create a polished product this is actually surprisingly good. A common criticism of something like this is that the content can be rather shallow and offer little of value, however, Devolver has managed to create a fairly deep and immersive environment. This game takes place in a factory full of exotic plants. From the get go the player is challenged as to what to do as various enemies are spawned around every corner, many of them are clear kill-or-be-killed missions.

Within the factories you have to navigate the plant, destroy turrets and a wall full of obstacles, and release the needed powers in order to create a portal that will allow you to progress further into the game.

The levels are well designed and it took me a few playthroughs before I became comfortable with them. The default game settings are under the player’s control with the option to speed up time. This can be done up until the time point you’ve given yourself to complete the level, setting the total time to six hours and speed up the actual game play by 10,000%. You can take another spin through the level with time slowed down but it’s extremely risky since multiple attacks can occur at once.

The enemy types can be considered a science experiment, they constantly evolve and change from what we saw the first few attempts at the game. Everything from how they move and where they appear should offer you lots of enjoyment trying to discover their patterns. They change at random throughout each level which makes for a rather exciting type of challenge.

Devolver does well with many of the Vita’s unique elements such as touch controls, gyro control and even a tilt
