In the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Percy Jackson is a descendant of the legendary Greek hero Theseus. He’s a student at Camp Half-Blood (think “Weasley High School”) and made friends with many popular kids. They’re helping him and his half-brother and friend, Demetrios, save Camp Half-Blood from monsters. To accomplish this, the teens must prove they are part-Gods by donning special rings that appear in the palm of each other’s hand and must defeat the monster.
This adaptation of Rick Riordan’s bestselling series is full of supernatural elements: Percy, the hero (Percy Jackson) and his friends must prevent the death of their godly parent. To do so, they must complete a quest in which they head to places that have mystical properties — places like the underworld, ancient Egypt, and the remote island of Crete. Kids can follow along by reading the books, but this is a movie version with new characters (including Percy’s brothers). It opens with the quest to save Percy’s mom, Ceres, who is about to be sacrificed by a monster, then follows with his friends’ journey to get back to Camp Half-Blood. There, they meet new characters (including Ares, a character from the main books), and must battle monsters and gods including Orion and the Sphinx, and a blind giantess, Persephone, who’s searching for her child.
This 2011 animated film is based on Greek mythology and follows a 13-year-old boy named Percy Jackson (voiced by Logan Lerman) and his quest to prove he is a “true” Greek god. After Percy’s mother is kidnapped by monsters, he and his friends accompany his mother to the underworld, where he is challenged to battle monsters and the god of the underworld (which includes a dark side). Percy wears the costume of a Greek God (which takes the form of a lion) and carries a sword that can sense emotions. He runs into trouble when he tries to eat a few key people in the underworld. During the fight, Percy’s mother is pulled into the underworld by Hades and calls for him to help, which leads to several plot twists.
In Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters a twelve-year-old New Yorker (Logan Lerman) discovers he’s a descendant of the Greek god Poseidon. After a middle school prank leaves him awestruck, he embarks on a cross-country journey to rescue Camp Half-Blood where the campers are also descendants of the Greek gods. He’s joined by new friends, the satyr Grover (Chris Colfer), a young man named Neil (Brandon T. Jackson), and an Athenian warthog named Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario). Uma Thurman, Rosario Dawson and Pierce Brosnan co-star.
