in the press notes from the cannes film festival, allen talks about how he made the movie. he notes that vicky cristina barcelona starts when she is in spain on vacation and her two best friends (rebecca hall and scarlett johansson ) decide to travel with her. a few months into the trip, she starts to feel guilty about whether or not she is cheating on doug (chris messina). she calls home and tells her boyfriend to let her go to spain and “cure” whatever he has. once there, she starts to develop an interest in a much younger man who runs into her at a restaurant.
this friendship/love triangle is the main focal point of vicky cristina barcelona and it is fun to watch. when vicky cristina barcelona was first screened in 2014, reviewers were confused by the whole lesbian thing. and they were confused as to why a woman would be having a lesbian affair. it seems that a lot of the lesbianism is more of a double entendre and can actually be quite risqu?. its a film that gets the audience guessing and is filled with great performances and top-notch humor.
i think what people need to understand is that vicky and cristina are great girls. they are great friends and have a genuine friendship. they had a rather rough life and a rough relationship, and as girls, they needed a reason to not feel alone.
