Oprah Winfrey has revealed she had a “heartbreaking” phone call with the daughter of a former college star, now serving a life sentence for murder, who wanted to put her time behind bars behind her.

Cotton’s daughter, Brandi Hance, asked Winfrey in a 2007 interview, to use her media empire, she believed, to make sure the truth about her father’s innocence emerged and the justice system put her father to death.

In a wide-ranging interview with Vanity Fair published on Tuesday, Winfrey, who has a relationship with the Hance family, says she was put off by the intensity of the 34-year-old’s conviction, and wanted to leave it in peace.
