so far, the project has been used in a handful of schools and universities for research purposes, and has been vetted as being appropriate for under-16s. but one of the aspects of minecraft that could prove irresistible to adults is its collaborative nature. the minecraft server has been set up to allow players to join and create their own areas in the virtual world. anyone can join another player’s area, and then can create and join their own. areas can be as large or small as the players want. they can be led by a world leader or they can be more flexible and create their own structures. this concept has already proven to be effective in helping kids around the world collaborate and work together to build their own virtual libraries.
a minecraft server is free to set up, but players have to pay for a copy of minecraft. the server can be set up on any computer, but to view the images above we used a server set up on a raspberry pi. the minecraft server can be set up so that players can view the original world, but also a “screen shot” (image) of that world. so the player can still see the sights and sounds of the real world, but the child can also see and experience the virtual world that its in the same place.
