Getting to Know Your Camera and Light

How you start a picture depends on how you photograph. Fortunately, all digital cameras come equipped with features that make digital photography easy. The reason why? Digital photography uses computers and the Internet to print pictures that are created by software.

In addition to your digital camera, there are two main types of lighting you can use to create a picture: natural light and artificial light. Both produce results, but artificial light is not as forgiving as natural light.

Setting your camera settings to autofocus makes your camera work for you. Autofocus is a kind of a controlled automatic: It focuses and sets the exposure automatically. When you see the exclamation point appear in the viewfinder, autofocus is set.

Although having a tripod and camera accessories is highly recommended, you may have a hard time finding a cheap and heavy tripod in your budget. A simple table-top tripod or a sturdy tripod with three to five legs is plenty for your light stands, brackets, and props.

Illuminating Your Subject

It’s great when you have a model in a room set up for you. However, a lot of times, you may have to set up your own scene and will need to light it yourself. If you do, you need to know how to use your light sources. You can use natural light, artificial light, or both, depending on the type of image you’re creating.

If you want to create your own light source, you need to find a way to attach your light. Normally, you use a light stand and string, which I cover in the sections “Working with Stands and Strings,” and “Using Portable Light Stand,” respectively. You can also mount a light on a tripod or on a stand of some sort. Or you can use your camera as a light with no stand or tripod. Either way, you need to find a way to hold the light up high, usually about 10 feet from the subject.

Working with Stands and Strings

Stands, strings, and their accessories are the standard way that people light a subject. They’re also the standard way people light using a tripod.

Step 1. Download the image

You can grab the source files for this tutorial directly by clicking on the image below.

Once you have the files downloaded, open Photoshop. You will notice that we have a new folder open called Flags (or a new folder called Flags in if you have not worked with Photoshop Elements). This is where we will save our final image.

Step 2. Import the image and crop your design

Open the image you want to create your flag design in Photoshop.

To import your image, go to File > Import.

Next you will need to crop your image.

Locate the crop box in the center of your image by using your mouse to click and drag diagonally across the image.

Next, you will need to crop your design.

Select all of the design you want to use in your image.

Hold down the CTRL key (on your keyboard) and click the crop box. This will crop your image to only contain the design you selected.

Step 3. Place your design on the image

Next, you will need to align your image and place your design on the image.

There are a few ways to do this.

If you use Photoshop Elements 16.0 and above, you can simply align your design by dragging it to the desired position.

Click the Align and Distribute Options on the Tools menu.

This will give you a dialog box with the options, click Align Options at the top.

Your picture will only be aligned if there is enough room on the image. In this case, my design is too big to properly align it, so I will have to make room for it.

After aligning your design, you will see a “Fit” option to fill the available space and align the image.
