the movie starred claudine barretto, who plays josie’s eldest daughter carla. with a rather unique and strong on-screen presence, she gave a credible and convincing portrayal of an unloved and neglected eldest daughter who is usually the butt of all the jokes. it was indeed no easy task, but she pulled it off with the method acting techniques that she has mastered, to the extent that she is now a very popular actress and one of the most bankable actresses in the country. this is definitely the first time she has earned a great bankable character.
carla, in her turn, has a great comeback in the movie, in her first major role, which is a very strong and a very credible performance. she has the ability to portray very realistic scenes in a competent manner, giving you a very convincing performance. in a role that is too big for her, she managed to carry it off.
to everyone’s surprise, lea’s husband raffy comes with his own kids because of a recent scandal and threatens to leave her when she refuses to go back with him. because of their ill-fated union, the adults in the picture struggle with the sexual issues. the young characters in the film, such as the rebellious ojie, end up learning real life lessons from dealing with their own sexual problems. it is also a charming piece of cinematic art that features several colorful scenes that reflect a cultural disparity between the adults and the children with a tone-setting excerpt of a pre-arrival homecoming ritual of overseas filipinos.
the acting is superb, with the acting and cinematography of stanley wong and the music composed by charles canonge. the production quality of the movie is also topnotch. director chito s. roo has a great handle on the screenplay, editing, and pace of the film. he also has a passion for filmmaking, and that really showed in this movie.
the film has a soul, a human spirit that transcends the film itself. the real message of the film is that lea and her mother should have been together, and that lea shouldnt feel guilty for wanting to stay and work somewhere else, because as a human being, she has the right to have a say in her own life.
the movie has a very strong female character, lea, and not the predictable perfect nagging mother. lea isnt a dumb as some women are portrayed in the movies. she is smart and brave, and wants to be the best for her family.
people consider this movie as a box office hit, but to me, for a good movie, it should not be a commercial success, it should not. if a movie does not have heart, a good story, and a moral, all that will do is fill the seats.
anak is a tale of what happens to kids who grow up on the road, away from their mother because their mothers are on a long overseas assignment. the father of the family is always the caregiver which might have been the reason why nobody wants to be the one to take over that role.
the eldest child is based on what was happening to her as a teenager years ago. she had to navigate through the crossroads of choice while being influenced by her mother’s absence. her resilience is what helped her persevere for a normal life.
