Microsoft Windows
AutoCAD was first available as a product for Microsoft Windows. AutoCAD was available for Windows and Macintosh for the professional user, and for DOS for the hobbyist and student. AutoCAD was bundled with a copy of Microsoft Windows. The Windows and Mac version of AutoCAD included:

AutoCAD Drawing Environment: a program that let users create, edit, and annotate drawings. In AutoCAD for Windows, the software consisted of a Windows shell application and an accompanying AutoCAD program. Users could also start Autodesk Design Review to preview drawings.

Integrated CADDIE: a suite of integrated programs that let users create technical drawings. In AutoCAD for Windows, this included AutoCAD, as well as a suite of add-on programs:
Vector Graphics: produced with the most complex vector graphics, including construction lines, constraints, standard and custom linetypes, text, symbols and an assortment of geometric objects. This application was very useful for construction professionals.
AutoLISP: a general purpose programming language, the most common one in AutoCAD for Windows. AutoLISP was very powerful, and the possibility of linking AutoCAD drawing functions with AutoLISP code made it very useful for extended drawing functions and for integration with application add-ons.
In the Macintosh version, the CADDIE suite was combined with a program called AutoLISP Workbench to form the WorkbenchLISP and included:
AutoCAD: The most complex application, combining the ability to draw and publish vector graphics with a full-featured 2D Drafting program.
AutoLISP: A general purpose programming language, the most common one for AutoCAD.
AutoLISP Workbench: A separate program in the suite for AutoLISP programming.

AutoCAD was originally created by the Structural Analysis Group at the University of California, Berkeley. It was distributed through an Autodesk Technical Reseller.

The first version of AutoCAD was released in 1984. It was initially written in Fortran, but later in Turbo Pascal. It was first available as a licensed version for Microsoft Windows. Initially, the version of AutoCAD was 2.1d, named 2.1D, however it was later renamed to AutoCAD. In 1988,
