History
AutoCAD came about as a result of a research project that began in 1977 by the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) which was supported by the US Navy. The project, funded by the US Department of Defense, was named “Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (Xerox PARC) Graphics System” (XGS). An excerpt from an article on the history of the software reads, “The original goal of XGS was to determine if it was possible to develop a graphics system that used electronic means rather than traditional photographic methods.” The team at PARC, led by Alan Kay, were able to develop an interactive drawing system.
The first version of AutoCAD was called AutoCAD/1D, and was first released in December 1982. When it was released, it cost about $1,500.
