Sudanese authorities have blocked a tweet calling for protesters to join the “day of rage” against the price of bread in the capital Khartoum.
Amnesty International’s Twitter account was apparently blocked on Monday.
In the message, the rights organisation asked people to join a demonstration on Tuesday when the price of bread will be raised from $0.06 to $0.08 a loaf.
Sudanese Twitter users have been sharing that message, but the official account of Sudanese state television STV was also blocked.
The STV official account said the reason for the blocking was that it had “violated a request” to stop retweeting the Amnesty International message.
It is not clear who was behind the blocking or why.
Sudan has experienced mass demonstrations in the past year in response to long-term shortages of food and fuel, which have left people on the brink of famine.
Shortages were caused by decades of neglect during two decades of civil war between the north and south of Sudan, which broke out in the early 1990s.
Shortages also occurred during the rule of Omar al-Bashir, who was removed from power on 3 April, after months of mass protests.
