Maurice Bjart was born in 1909 in Zurich, the son of a Swiss engineer. He began teaching when he was five years of age to earn money for his family. After he completed his military service in the Swiss army, he continued teaching and studied at the Zurich school. Later, he went to England, where he studied at the Sadler’s Wells Ballet School and the Ballet Week School. Throughout his early career, he appeared in such ballets as La Chatte and Manon. In the 1930s his ballets were performed in the United States and England. In 1939, Bjart and many of his colleagues were brought to London by Ballet Rambert to continue its work. After the outbreak of World War II, however, Bjart was called to serve in the Swiss Army. When the war ended, he resumed his work as a ballet director. It was at this time that he began to establish his own company in Switzerland, which became the Ballet Lausanne.
Bjart was one of the three founders of the Ballets du XX sicle. His first major production was Le Pavillon Dorigny (1942), in which he created various roles, including L’Arbre, Hectomante and the Chorus. His more important achievement, however, was La Traviata (1948), which contained the famous “femme de chambre” scene. The work was a huge success in Switzerland and Poland, and it helped him to establish his company in Lusaka, Zambia in 1952.
National Ballet of Portugal was established in 1943 in Lisbon, with the collaboration of Ballet Sintra (1938) and Ballet Espana (1940). It was designed to give financial relief to professional artists, who were hitherto deprived of other sources of income. The first Musical Director was Alberto Lecuona, with Eugenia de Sousa Carneiro as a child teacher. The first star was Anna Maria Infranco.
