wherever there is a romance, kapoor has been quite successful in making it work. only in barfi, he almost goes overboard in trying to make it work. the end of the film is not very satisfying. it becomes sort of a happy-ever-after. the film has a nice rhythm, the background story is very good and interesting, but the film is not very well thought out.

director mrunal sharma’s barfi is a well-meaning but flimsy romance between a young speech- and hearing-impaired man and a beautiful young woman. although with a cameo from the mother, it doesn’t really have the depth and nuance of earlier films like dilwale dulhania le jayenge, jab we met, etc.

director sanjay gupta has created a world which is almost impossible to disbelieve, and with its dreamlike settings, his ability to draw on the camera to make it almost seem like the characters are completely unaware of the camera in a way which is extraordinary. there are searing shots of chopra’s actor husband’s eyes, which speak of the kind of brain damage and stresses that she, and, by extension, her parents, would have undergone, and sequences which are somewhere between dazzling and terrifying. but the most effective aspect of barfi is that it looks and feels like a really beautifully made film, and which has been worked on extremely hard. for something of this quality, it does not need to be anything other than brilliantly entertaining.
