The X-Y morph engine, which is why I called the sound engine ‘phat’, is an entirely new synthesis engine, which can be used to generate sounds in the same way that multiple voices and oscillators are used in other synthetic instruments. However, it’s not an additive synth, and the timbral character of the resulting sounds is fundamentally different from that of additive synth synthesis. Resynthesis is a completely new approach to synthesis, and it’s fair to say that it’s taken me a while to get it right. The output of the ‘phat’ is always in the form of one or more Voice Programs, whose component parts can be amplified and/or shaped by the user to generate sounds of various timbres and character. All of this can be done by editing the X-Y morph parameters, or by using the global envelope shape available on the Editor, Effects and Mod pages, and the system’s multimode envelope shape available on the Morph Timeline and Mod pages. The ‘phat’ takes a musical sample and derives all the sound by re-analyzing the sample from various perspectives. For instance, there are 64 partials (high-order, or ‘Harmonics’) which are derived from the input sample’s ‘pitched’ signal. In addition, there are 32 filter ‘voices’, which are derived from the input sample’s ‘noise’ signal. The difference between harmonic and noise synthesis is expressed most clearly in the sound by the ratio between the harmonic and noise ‘voices’, and in Cameleon this ratio varies over time. Over time, the ratio increases as the pitch of the harmonic voice increases, which generates the bright, sharp tones heard in some additive synths. It’s possible, however, to adjust both ratios independently.
The Resonator page is one of the most powerful tools in Cameleon, because it offers the ability to shape the pitch of a synthesised sound without creating a noticeable difference in the audio – an ability that is essential for any formant filter editor. The Resonator page comes with a button for adding or subtracting pitches from the initial sound, and a slider for setting the amount by which they should be modified. It will also automatically adjust the settings as you edit them, to keep any new settings to a minimum. You can do this by creating your own version of a resonator, or by simply applying a resonator from the Presets page directly to your sound – though in this case it can’t automatically compensate for any pitch changes that you make in the Resonator page. The most useful thing that you can do with the resonator is to break it up into multiple units, each of which you can control with a different Resonator setting. This allows you to create the kind of mellow, repeating sound that made many people fall in love with the K5000 in the first place, but can now also be achieved with some of the more accessible add-ons. Of course, the K5000 and even the Vox Chameleon aren’t the only add-ons to make resonators possible. The original SP-1200’s $400 Chameleon soft synth was one of the very first synths to offer resonators to this kind of effect, and the K5000 soft synth has resonators called Voice Programs. In the days before the K5000 and Vox Chameleon, the main way of shaping resonators was to use the real-time envelopes in the K5000’s Voice Programs. Envelope shaping has long since become a redundant side-effect of the Resonator function. What has become essential is the oscillator’s ability to decide on its own whether to vibrate or not, and it may be very useful for a resonator to respond in a similar way. In fact, there’s a resonator on the Resonator page called ‘Resonator’ which can be used to demonstrate just how flexible this new resonator concept can be.
