I have implemented this before using android standard methods like Picasso or Glide, but I am wondering if there is a way to make this work as a AsyncTask? Can anyone suggest a method to do this?

With some possible signature of your url, this will launch an asynchronous request, and place a placeholder image on the imageView. It will then wait for the image to be loaded and will fade in the real one, automatically taking care of the crossfade.
Of course, you can also have a Listener for the success callback, or for progress and errors. You can also do the same with Picasso, by just passing it the url.
