to our knowledge, this is the first study to examine whether spiritual resources (in the form of religious orientation) actually mediate the effect of other coping strategies. prior work has supported this in cardiac patients and epilepsy patients. furthermore, spiritual coping resources appeared to mediate the effect of catastrophizing (as measured with the csq) on disability in a mixed chronic pain sample [43]. in our study, patients who had higher levels of religious orientation scores at baseline were less likely to reduce their levels of catastrophizing at 6 months. this may indicate that religious orientation is a component of spiritual coping (perhaps the spiritual side) and that coping may reinforce religious beliefs [ 7, 8 ].
