the way delcam create all of our products is by taking the whole idea and working through it with complete end to end answers, first from design, then engineering, then manufacturing and then execution. weve got a dedicated healthcare marketing team and we constantly engage with healthcare professionals, so if theyre after a product, then someone will go out and see what we can do. it is about listening to the healthcare community and what theyd like to see.

our whole ethos is that you can use delcam, but in the process of developing the product, that you can’t use it. the reason for that is because delcam is a software vendor who also happen to do cad/cam, and you cant use the functionality and add to it. we know what you need from a machine vision solution, in order to do the work, but we also know what the end user needs, and so we combine the two. plus we can add the power, from our lighting, sdm and cmm.

i’m a consultant, so i travel around the uk all the time helping businesses. we travel from one company to another and weve seen other software solutions. in terms of software that supports medical devices and the use of capital equipment, no one has sold a commercial solution within the medical community. and i think that as cad/cam software becomes more powerful and integrated, that will start to happen more. but what it will do is take us out of the short term, linear market. users will start to look to non-linear solutions.

there are lots of companies that sell different software to build prototypes. some of them do it for medical products, but the vast majority of those do 3d printing. when you look at a medical product, it will be mainly designed by 3d printing, which is a fascinating way to create and so on, but if you want to invest in that, youll have to sell to a lot of 3d printers, which are specialist companies who are interested in product and theyre not interested in whether the medical market comes in.

chris lawrie: we talked through the product with them and with specialist fitters, and worked out the customer service that was required to support them. what it was, was a phased system where they would buy a product, they’d receive it and then a pharmacist would work with them on it to get the right fitting. ultimately, the fitters would take it to the customer’s home, they’d do the fitting and they would send the scans to a pharmacist who would work with the patient and their doctor to optimise the fitting on an ongoing basis. this was made possible by acquiring a cad/cam division and embedding it within the orthotics company. because it was part of their business, they were able to make that material investment at the same time as we were making the investment in the business.
chris lawrie: yes, thats a fair point. its really about trying to get the business end sorted. and its in the business end where dentcad is going to be used for a lot of other types of work too. the final stages of the dental treatment can be quite difficult. in particular, often the restorative processes can be quite clumsy and theyre prone to a lot of things that can go wrong. generally the problem is that you can only do the [dental] process so many times because its so complicated. theres very little margin for error. this is the weakness of the process. its not just about creating the same dent but rather about creating the same exact dent in a high-precision way. this is something that in general a lot of manufacturing businesses cant do. what weve done with dentcad and dentmill is weve got a technology in the business end that allows us to develop a software solution for designing a product like a dent. we get rid of the business end from the software to its basically a very pure software solution, and thats where the cad part of delcam comes in.
