Depression and its relation to impulsivity among U.S. college students: The college alcohol study.
Despite its increased incidence among college students, research on depression among college students in the United States remains minimal. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of depression and its relation to college alcohol consumption and substance use in the United States. The authors used cross-sectional data from the College Alcohol Study, a nationally representative telephone survey of 1,564 college students at 34 U.S. institutions (first study completed in 2001; data from 2008 collected by the authors). Depression was measured using the eight-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8), an effective instrument for assessing depressive symptoms and general clinical cutoffs were used to define levels of depressive symptomatology. Depressive symptoms varied across the United States. Only 37% of all students surveyed (40% of male and 35% of female students) reported no depressive symptoms, with 44% reporting minimal symptoms, 18% reporting mild symptoms, 13% reporting moderate symptoms, and 7% reporting severe depression. Students reporting depression tended to be older, male, and of minority group (primarily African-American) descent. Students reporting symptoms of depression also reported a greater number of drinks per week (M = 2.42) than students who did not report depression symptoms (M = 1.74) (t(1573) = 5.6, p
