My last gripe is about Fujifilm X-Trans sensor support. As can be seen from the “Fujifilm X-Trans RAW Conversion” section of this review, there’s still a lot of room for improvement. That’s not to say that results are very bad, but the slight painted-on effect is still present if you examine images very closely. Fujifilm’s bundled RAW converter based on Silkypix does a much better job. I have no doubt in my mind that Adobe will eventually nail the rendering of X-Trans sensor RAW files. However, I find it strange that Fujifilm seemingly hasn’t been helping them out. Let’s face it, Silkypix may be good – I personally don’t have much experience with it. But Lightroom is more popular and will most likely remain so. Fujifilm would do themselves a favor by helping Adobe perfect the necessary algorithms.
It may be true that Lightroom is a stable, rock solid program on macOS, but leaving Lightroom on your Mac for a while opens the door to unwanted and unforeseen problems, as happens with any computer program. And those can be slightly frustrating if you are not entirely aware that the program might be eating some resources or lagging long enough to bother you. Others could probably testify that Lightroom is actually not as stable as I suggest, but that may simply be a flavor of the day. I personally experience two problems with Lightroom. One is that the Import Projects dialog window doesn’t close when importing files. Normally, that doesn’t cause a problem, but for some reason, it does with the Import Projects dialog from time to time. This can be a bit annoying, but it has been like that for so long that I have put up with it. The other problem I’ve found so far has been with the Exporting process. Even with the most simple things, as appears to be the case with this particular Apple Pencil, the export process gets a bit slow. Shapes seem to produce a bit of a lag in Lightroom; perhaps that is a clue that more optimization work could be done. Unfortunately, some problems related to the reliability of Photoshop are only revealed when you actually need them to work. For example, color palette problems happen on some Photoshop images, but I have yet to encounter a situation when Lightroom cannot fix color from Photoshop properly. But that too has been stable for a while now. So much for the good. What if you actually need some of the most important features of Photoshop? In my case, I use my iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil to sketch some images in Photoshop, which I then export as IPTC or EPS files. But exporting has become rather laggy in Lightroom, and really, that is really bad when it asks you to type a caption for every individual image during the export process. Of course, after several months or so, that is no longer a problem, but it should have been addressed prior to that. That could easily be a hint to Adobe that there are a lot of situations when the application could be Qtifying and rewriting. Let’s actually start with that, since developing the software can afford the extra resource use.
The outlook of the shape layers in Photoshop may be limited, but the capabilities of the feature go a step further than what we assume about it. In the traditional marquee selection tools, the selection is limited to the raster process, and in many cases, the output will result in the sharp pixilated edges, which are never good looking. But the shape layers can act as an individual object within the document with its attribute to maintain the finest quality.
