i must have missed the scope part of your post. i do appreciate the help, and i do hope you succeed. ive been tempted to read into doing this for a while now (after reading a few of your posts).
in fact, i was going to reply to you here. i have not seen a microscope that can decap, as far as i know, that actually decaps it. i know what you mean about the loss of functionality, but as far as i know, you cannot read the chip without decapping it.

but i am still having a problem understanding how this works. from what i have read, if you damage the chip, it is difficult to read the otp values.
if you look at the schematic, it shows the +5 voltage supply to the chip, but the main purpose of the battery is to supply power to the cpu. so even if you cut the +5 line and shorted it, and damaged the chip, you could still have access to the otp (or program memory). from what i understand, the memory ics are protected by a fuse, and the cpu itself is protected by the eprom. if the cpu is damaged, the memory is still there, so you can still read the otp.
