It is commonly asserted that Vasyukov (who died in 1910) was the greatest violin player of his day, but, as he didn’t play a concerto (making the claim somewhat dubious), it’s unknown how well he truly matched Shostakovich. The Russian violinist Alexander Glazunov loved Vasyukov and was with him when he died in 1910. Glazunov later became a good friend and protégé of his own.
