the whole thing is really a waste of time. i think most western gamers aren’t really interested in japanese games, especially not the non-rpg genres like action or racing. if japanese games weren’t so stereotyped, i might be more interested. but it’s really just a caricature that’s most often used as a scapegoat, especially in the eyes of the press. if you really want to play a good japanese game, there’s still plenty to choose from, like the upcoming dragon quest ix (the first japanese rpg to have co-op!).
there’s one other thing that annoys me about japanese games. i grew up on the tomb raider, final fantasy, and zelda series. but, i never really got into japanese games. the only one i really play are the persona games. but i would like to play more japanese games.
i think the biggest problem is the limited market. if they made a more realistic game for a more mature audience, the audience would expand. you might have to change the setting from sword of the new world to tokyo! but i think that’s a small sacrifice. the persona games are more about escapism than the top-down, turn-based, grind fest of zelda.
