“Thomas Dobbins’s Scandalous Edwardian Age” is a long narrative poem by W. B. Yeats, written at his summer home, Wolfbane Hill, in Ballylester, County Kerry. It was written in 1908 and not published until 1971, six years after Yeats’s death. The work is based on the author’s previous poem “The Wild Swans at Coole,” published in 1907.

Summary
In the early years of the 20th century, Thomas Dobbins, an Englishman living in Ireland, is a vagrant who delights in London’s entertainment venues. He wanders the city and frequents public houses with a fresh-faced hussy in tow, a woman named Mary McCarthy, known to her friends as “Nora Regan.” Dobbins has no permanent residence or job, but he manages to support himself with a number of cons. He works as a “blackmailer,” for which he is paid by a wealthy Frenchwoman, who threatens to reveal secrets from her past. Dobbins uses his knowledge to blackmail the woman in order to earn more money for his reckless lifestyle.

The first part of the poem occurs during a warm summer day in Dublin. Dobbins, having recently been released from prison, feels energetic and happy, and reunites with his childhood friend Jack Major, with whom he spends the day. Major recalls a previous disastrous meeting with a taunting woman at a hotel, but feels that Dobbins will perform a scam he has been planning. Dobbins has contacted the woman in question, described in the poem as Mary McCarthy, who agrees to meet him. She summons Dobbins to her hotel room. Dobbins begins his story, boasting that he has wronged many people—in particular, a woman named Jenny who he had tried to blackmail for money.
