That’s right. We’ve created an emacs function triggering a shell command when certain files are marked. We can now implement any number of ways the process state can be updated, but from a simple operation like x-display-configuration that changes the display setting. When I load this function, I can toggle between console and tty within a keybinding. And I can implement a couple other ways to invoke this routine too.
No doubt, the last week has been dedicated to procrastination and friday was my time to face that. It’s time to think about what other things I can do interesting over the weekend and on thing I never did was to make use of leksah for code highlighting.
That’s right. Perhaps more interesting then making my own shell is that I realized that the shell doesn’t just stop when I hit return, but has a rich set of traits that suits my editing style. I’ll leave it to the reader to imagine how I might use these properties to accomplish a task like formatting the syntax highlighting color in vim.
This was the second part. I’ll continue my journey into Emacs by looking at a few more lisp functions in my quest to understand the language better. In part one, I looked at how to create a simple interactive shell and some of the common actions.
This week I’m going to look at how to render the shell into a view and write about the workflow implications. Remember, this is the second part. The first steps were to create a shell and render it as an init file or define it as an alist. While I’m getting used to this process, I may or may not save it in a file.
