The first of which is a prequel titled Smurfs: The Lost Village , which Sony confirmed in a recent press release. To be directed by Kelly Asbury, the film is said to be inspired by the 2009 video game Smurfs Party developed by Red Fly Studio. The game was developed for the Wii, and Smurfs: The Lost Village will be the first Smurfs animated film released in 3D.

Following Sony’s hints at their Smurfs live action The Smurfs and The Smurfs 3D movies, this summer will see the release of the 3D animated family film Smurfs: The Lost Village . Directed by Kelly Asbury, Smurfs: The Lost Village is a prequel to the 2009 video game Smurfs Party in which the Smurfs play tennis and go on adventures with Gargamel, who now wants to take over the Smurf village.

The supporting cast includes the flirty girl Smurfette is instantly attracted to, the single mom who’s part of the Smurf Village family, and Papa Smurf’s two “kids,” who swap Smurfstick tips with the girls. Although at times the kids may be annoying — especially their demands of Smurfette to wear a bikini top — the show is still predictable and family-friendly.

SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE contains more gross-out humor than the last three live-action Smurfs films, but the jokes mostly don’t involve the baby-blue characters, who (in the 2011 movie) were still pushing 140 pounds. The characters are still pretty thin in the new movie, but they still appear to play around with some Smurf-esque physics that brings goofy zings and winks of joy.

This is a story aimed at little kids, so that’s not too much of a problem. The plot is fairly thin, but this is a story aimed at little kids, so that’s not too much of a problem. The female Smurfs are like Amazons compared to the Smurf Village cohort. There’s warrior archer Smurfstorm (a well-cast Michelle Rodriguez), perky and sweet Smurfblossom (Ellie Kemper), smart and decisive Smurflily (Ariel Winter), and, of course, the wise and maternal Smurfwillow.
Following on from the initial teaser, the new trailer for Smurfs: The Lost Village goes all in on wacky written sound effects and dialogue quotes, aiming squarely at the younger crowd. We’ll have to see what the movie itself is like, but for now take a look at the new footage.
When Smurfette (voice of Demi Lovato) finds a mysterious map that suggests the location of another Smurf colony, she and her friends Brainy (Danny Pudi), Clumsy (Jack McBrayer) and Hefty (Joe Manganiello) set out on a journey to find the lost village. When they discover the evil Gargamel (Rainn Wilson) is also looking for the village, the two parties must race against each other on a journey that will take them through the dark depths of the Forbidden Forest. The voice cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf.
