Paying tribute to the genius of Padmapriya, a short film on the same was recently screened at the Melita Hall in Nagpur.
Helmed by Salim -Barna, the film was completed in only 14 days. “While we were working on the film, Arvind Sawhney is a veteran journalist from our state who was keen to have Padmapriya’s story. We were lucky to have him on board.
He told us about the association between Padmapriya and Bheema Rao, a noted philanthropist of our region. Bheema Rao was a distant relative of Padmapriya’s family,” Salim -Barna, who directed the film, said.
The film was produced by Salim Mirpurkar and Vishwakarma Mirpurkar and was shot by Vishwakarma Mirpurkar.
Vishwakarma said the film was made on a small budget and it depicts the parallel lives of Padmapriya and Bheema Rao which cannot be found in any historical record.
Padmapriya was born into a poor Telugu family on August 17, 1918 in the border town of Vaniyambadi and she lost her mother when she was still a child.
She was a student of a local school at Tirupati, which is famous for its dance troupe. At the age of 13, she joined the Anjali Devi School in Tirupati as a teacher and was a dancer there too.
She was blessed with great talent and also suffered losses including an eye when she was at the dancing school in Tirupati.
She married Ashok in 1942 and within a year, she gave birth to a boy who died within two months. It took seven years before she gave birth to her daughter Sumangala, after which she remarried.
But Padmapriya was heartbroken and started socializing with influential people. “She lost her eye sight in the war. She couldn’t read and write. But she started learning and reading books from her neighbours. Some writers and social workers took interest in her and opened doors for her. She started writing articles in newspapers,” Vishwakarma said.
The film features a narration with the visuals
The film features an ensemble cast of Varun Dhawan, Sonam Kapoor, Varun Singh, Sonali Bendre, Ishita Dutta and Shreyas Talpade and also features an item number by debutante actress Shraddha Kapoor. It was shot in various cities in India.
While it is the first film of Shankar as a director, it is the second directorial effort of Jeyamohan after Jyoti. It is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Sagar Marathe of T-Series. The shooting of the film began in mid 2014 and it was initially planned to be released in 2016, but it was delayed to 2017. It will be distributed by T-Series. The first look of the film was released on the T-Series YouTube channel on May 7, 2017.
Plot
The film starts with a group of aeronautical engineers trying to make a dream come true. The engineers create an aeroplane that becomes the key to their most secret wish. A Canadian billionaire Peter Kruger (Varun Singh) falls in love with a beautiful beauty queen, Divya Singh (Sonam Kapoor) and pursues her in India. At the same time, Divya’s ex-boyfriend, Ajay (Varan Dhawan), wants to get back his girlfriend. Here comes the twist: In India, a terrorist named Rahim (Rajneesh Duggal) wants to make Divya the inspiration of his bomb. Rahim uses a different weapon to get the two lovers together.
Rahim decides to let them come face-to-face when Kruger takes Divya on a private tour of the most beautiful region of India — Rajasthan — which he calls Wonderlands. However, the real wonderland is not in Rajasthan but in the heart of the two lovers, Divya and Ajay. However, by making his people fall in love and live on their own, he begins to lose his grip on life.

Judging from its plot, the film’s producer, T. Ramachandran has retained the sci-fi cinematic template that the director used in both Sarvam and Enthiran, films which helped to popularise the concept of a robotic hero. The classic style is much more original with one exception, in that the pilot is a human being in the first film and a robot in the second.
On one hand the new film is a stand alone and on the other it is an extended version of the already existing concept of the film Sarvam, even though the two films are separate in reality. To make the two stories closer to each other, Shankar has re-edited and dubbed the second part into the first one.

At the beginning of the film we find Shankar’s recurring theme of the human and the robot. In this case, the film is about two humans, their home planet and the robot that saves them from the planet’s attack. The different parts are played by the characters of the original concept, though a few of them have been slightly re-adjusted. In the first film Arvind Swamy (Dhanush) has been replaced by Arun (Naren), the robot by Aadhi (Ramya) and the villain by Sumana (Richa).
Aadhi’s character has been re-written to be more sonically vocal, and the robot’s master is portrayed by Dileep. I haven’t heard of that character before, though he appears to be the same stereotype of the robot master villain seen often in sci-fi films. It is no surprise that the robot himself is simply named the Robot.

The human characters are played in a much more realistic manner that fits the time that the film is set in. The first part of the film was set in the past, the opening credits starting in a dark room with a faint glow in the lower part of the wall. The world was dark, and the hero’s house was dimly lit. After the credits the film opens to a completely different scene, the same set, but at night. In the second half of the film the story takes place on Earth, again in the same family home.
