It would be tempting to claim that Tarkovsky did not even make a film, but this is exactly the point. The events in Stalker may have taken place, but the characters are dreamlike in a way that would not seem possible if they were real. The cinematography is incredibly beautiful, borrowing from the rarefied world of poetry and sculpture. The actors are strikingly real, usually performing their roles as if they really were there, and interacting with the other characters in a way that would make any child with a toy playpen jealous.
Tarkovsky is a byword for greatness, but his films are too esoteric for many people to ever have watched them. For many people, the greatest film ever made is still Nosferatu. Whereas Tarkovsky’s art is often considered to be of a piece, Stalker is often associated with a particular director, Andrei Tarkovskys. The person who made Solaris is not the same person who made Stalker, which is probably why so many people liked Solaris but not the film it inspired. There is something about a motion picture that seems to force the audience to confront the truth of the situation, and to meditate on the possibility that things are not always as they appear.
