i first learned about these scales in frank van vuuren’s book, the scales of the jazz guitar. as a recovering flutist, i have used these chords for improvising on the e-flute and the bass f-flute. they are especially helpful for improvising with jazz chord progressions, and used in the key of f minor, since the f minor scale has a pentatonic pattern with the same notes as the f major scale, but with the third and sixth note lowered. it’s a great pattern to use when you improvise, and it gives you 3 chords that you can always fall back on to help you get away from that “boring e chord” syndrome.
