in the same way that the t-shirt you’d wear to your first big party isn’t the same as the t-shirt you’d wear at your first day of work, the game you played for the first time isn’t necessarily the game you want to play again. that’s because the first time you play a game, it’s just you and the game and you don’t know what you’re doing. the second time you play a game, you’ve got the benefit of experience and you know what to expect. but that doesn’t mean that the first time is any less enjoyable.

also, because we’re going to be doing a series of videos like this we figured we’d start with the most basic game in the genre. here’s the trailer for just cause 2. it’s pretty much impossible to overestimate how good just cause 2 is. we’ll probably have more videos like this coming soon.

if you’ve never played just cause 2 and you’re interested, here’s a way of getting hold of it. the main website has a crack available, or, if you’re a bit sharper, you can just download the game from the original just cause 2 website.

the first time i played the original left 4 dead, i felt like the series was moving in the right direction but i also felt like it was still very much a shooter with the occasional funny moment, but much more like a shooter than a comedy. i wanted a lot more from it, and the inevitable sequel was more what i wanted, although there were still some moments that just didn’t work out as well as the first time, and also some moments that were ridiculous for what they were. it also doesn’t help that it was made by valve, and the team behind one of the greatest shooters of all time, so you’d expect it to be perfect.

just cause 2 comes at it from the opposite direction, with a story that is all about dramatic dissonance and unstable moments that change everything you know. the idea is that to make a good game, you need to make the player feel the tension that comes with playing a game and not take away all of the fun, which is something that it does, but only to an extreme. it’s an unstable game that allows you to do very cool things and very exciting things, but ultimately doesn’t give you much in the way of guidance on how you should do things. it’s a game that will challenge you in ways that a lot of games never have and never will, but it’s one that will also punish you if you don’t do things the right way. it doesn’t reward you for being correct, it rewards you for being right in a way that goes against what you know, and that’s something that i don’t think has been seen in a shooter before.
while playing the game, it made me wonder if it was ever going to do anything cool again. then it was over, and i still don’t know what it was about. it was all so much fun, except for the time where i was slapped silly. there were few moments that made me think i was actually doing something that was worth it, but most of it felt like the game had ended long before. it was all fun, but it wasn’t really a game.
not a completely remarkable game, but a very noteworthy game. dayz is a survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world. everything that is not killing zombies or building shelters is for you. it is a game that uses some ingenious ideas to make you feel like you are living in a world that you created. the concept that a game about building a game can do a better job of showing you what happens when things get really fucked up is pretty cool. the concept that a game about making a game can show you what it feels like to try to survive something like this is also pretty cool. it has some pretty impressive moments, but they come at a cost of not being entirely sure what you’re supposed to be doing or why you’re doing it. it’s a good game, but not quite as good as it might be.
