i find that liftoff is better for beginners, and drl is better for more experienced pilots. but if youre looking for something more out there, check out things like driven sim. its free, but very basic. you can fly with up to 4 other online people. you can try all sorts of crazy things with the simulator, like driving your quad with a rocket at the throttle, or just racing other drones. its a simple fpv simulator, but its also a really great starting place for learning to fly. you can fly many different track/map options, and you can also download and print custom maps. ive found that a huge majority of the drl community is made up of people who got started with driven sim.
if you want to up your game and actually use the capabilities of your drone, i would suggest liftoff. while it is a bit more difficult to get things set up exactly how you want them, the learning curve is much steeper, especially when you take into account that you have to do the setup yourself. i would suggest picking up a prebuilt quad, and then using the demo mode to get a feel for what your in for.
once you get a feel for the controls and where the features lie, its pretty easy to dive right into the custom map making in liftoff. there are two main ways to go about this. the first is to create and place a custom map with the map editor. the editor allows you to create your custom map from scratch, using the plane editor to create your own custom maps. you can also import a custom map from another sim (though the map editor isnt as extensive as in liftoff).
one of my favorite features is the ability to get creative with the camera. you can tilt it, zoom in and out, and of course pan. panning a camera is one of the biggest challenges and benefits of flying fpv. its one of the big things that will make your flight experience unique, but it can also be a real pain if youre not careful. you can of course just fly with the camera set to a fixed position, but thats not the same as panning. panning a camera is not a simple task and involves a lot of trial and error. you really have to have a good feel for the camera controls, and a good understanding of how to properly edit your map in liftoff to get it to pan just how you want it to.
