First published as a collaboration between Halvorssen and Lipsett on The Gauntlet, The Wolf of Snow Hollow followed the adventures of Thomas Edison, a middle-aged Viennese visiting an isolated mountain resort to find a source of brine, a deceptively simple process that would produce a large amount of fresh water and purify salt-laden seawater. The project was backed by Edison’s financial backers, but Halvorssen’s motivations were both artistic (he was drawn to the novel by Walter Mosley, to which he would later contribute the introduction) and political. While in the United States, Halvorssen protested against the Vietnam War and the draft lottery. When the editor of his college newspaper discovered his political activities, he was expelled. (Officials at Penn State said they could not find any records of Halvorsens expulsion.) He continued on at the school as editor of The Red & Blue, a conservative publication, until the magazine was evicted from its auditorium location and its back issues were trashed. Halvorsen was also deeply disturbed by a sociology course he took at Penn. The professor was known for radicalizing the mainstream media, including The Washington Post and The New York Times. Far from bridging the gap between the left and the right, the course showed him that academia was not the place to challenge the status quo, he recalls. None of the professors knew I wasnt political. I wasnt a political person. But he put this video on a list of 101 books with provocative titles on the syllabus, he says, while we were in class, and it just blew my mind. All of a sudden here was this whole worldview, this whole view of the world, and I just became extremely uncomfortable with the course. My whole world view began to change. I just dont want to leave that part of my life untested. As a result of that class, I wrote this book.
