the title track meteora was released as the first single from the album, and it immediately climbed to number one on the billboard charts, becoming their first number one single. the song also topped the modern rock charts for three weeks, as well as the mainstream rock charts for two weeks. in addition, the single peaked at number seven on the billboard hot 100 chart and at number two on the billboard hot digital songs chart, being the first single off of meteora to peak within the top 10 on the billboard hot 100 chart.

the album’s title track would also be a major hit, peaking at number 16 on the billboard hot 100. the song’s music video is featured on the video game rock band 2. the song has also been featured on the television shows dawson’s creek and entourage, and the episode of the o.c. entitled “the secret life of the american teenager” featured the song as well. a music video was made for the song as well.

meteora is considered by many to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time. the album earned linkin park a 2002 grammy award for best rock album, as well as a nomination for best hard rock performance. the album also won album of the year at the 2003 american music awards. to date, meteora has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and is linkin park’s second highest selling album.

a second coffee table book of photographs was released on september 12, 2005 through disney, titled a thousand suns: linkin park’s meteora.^[4] it was dedicated to the band’s fans who had supported them over the course of the 2003-2004 meteora tour. it features over 200 unique photographs taken by waterman throughout the entire tour. the majority of the photographs were taken on the u.s. leg of the tour, though some shots feature the band’s international tour stops in europe, australia, japan, and southeast asia. the book also features one-on-one interviews, quotes and anecdotes collected by rolling stone contributor steve baltin.^[2] the book was released in europe on september 15, 2005. in october 2009, the book was re-released under the title from the inside: linkin park’s meteora.

the first song, don’t stay , starts off sounding like a song to take revenge on a man in a relationship. but what happens is it turns into a song about depression and how nobody listens to you and that if you stay around too long you’ll regret it. then i could have been yours is really catchy and funny, but it feels like linkin park are trying too hard to be cool and not give the artist credit. like i said, the lyrics are very self-righteous, but they’re also not funny, in fact they’re kind of the opposite. no more words is another slow song about a broken heart. numb is about having problems with a girl, but the whole song is about the part of your heart that listens to your brain. low is a mosh pit song that should probably have a video. breaking the habit is a hip-hop song that is so vague it’s hard to know what it’s about. nobody’s listening doesn’t even try to be hip-hop, it’s the lyrics and guitar that just sound like hip-hop and the song’s chorus is very similar to the chorus of this love by the distillers. easier to run is a radio-friendly pop song about cheating. the rest of the album follows this trend, but i guess it’s okay, the band have gotten so big they can afford to make songs that don’t fit what they are. the first low is a proper power ballad, and hyperdrive sounds like a throwback to classic rock. but a thousand suns is a fast paced song that reminds me of the songs on meteora and hybrid theory that had a really weird feel. this album is a lot more varied than their previous albums and it’s a lot better for it. but it’s also a bit annoying because the album is missing a few songs. fly and knock knock are both great songs that would have been perfect as b-sides to the singles off of the album. knock knock is probably the most interesting song on the album, it sounds like it could have been on meteora or hybrid theory but it’s just a fun pop song instead. broken is a slow, sad song that would have been perfect for a b-side to faint , but it’s not there. the hunting party is a good song that would have been perfect for the singles off a thousand suns . overall it’s a solid album, but i wish it was a little more cohesive and a few songs more.
