single missions have a similar problem. they’re listed in a menu from which you select them by choosing them from a small list — and once you select them, you’re locked in to playing them that way. that means if you want to change a mission or go back to the briefing, you’ll have to abandon the already-loaded mission. this game seems better at flying than at communicating.
thanks to the unique weapons, especially the a-10’s shark-fin and aa-12’s guided armor-piercing projectiles, and the plane’s ability to equip camo nets, the a-10 is a force to be reckoned with here. it carries more than twice the ammo on hand of any other plane. for the long flight, you can equip the a-10 with a flak jacket for a little extra protection, and the a-10’s remote-controlled weapons are fully functional.
as you gain experience, you’ll get more fuel, and hopefully you won’t need to refuel on the ground during a mission. while the ai isn’t too bright, you might find yourself chasing down another plane and taking a shot at it to see how much fuel it has left; this can lead to a very amusing replay because when a plane goes belly-up and burns off a ton of fuel in a few seconds, you’ll be very glad you’re not flying next to it.
even a couple of kills will be a serious accomplishment in lock on, because weapons are very responsive and damage is immediate. should you run into trouble, the flack jacket should keep you from being shredded by explosions, and missiles can be turned on as the plane’s heading is critical. su-25 and su-27 planes fire from 50 or 70 kilometers out, and if you are very high up, it’s possible to get within firing range without being seen. a visual on the hud will show you the plane you’re shooting at.
dcs world comes with a mission editor in which you can drag, and drop, mission elements onto a screen, and carefully construct your own scenarios by connecting them with lines. there are even some pre-made missions, and you can build or modify them. the editor lets you create up to ten missions at once, and you can repeat any completed mission as often as you like. but you can only import one mission at a time, and you have to create all mission maps first, then fill them in. you can create them with the dcs world editor, of course, but it’s a lot easier to use our dcs world editor, plus a dcs world module called dcs messager. even with an action-packed editor, lock on’s multiplayer is minimal, so it’s unlikely you’ll have time for more than a few missions. the “cross” editor, available from the flanker 2.0 or lock on: modern air combat world installer, may help you out, but it’s not exactly an easy program to master and it’s far more difficult to use than dcs world’s default editor.
lock on players can also opt to purchase bonus aircraft skins, which are not included in the retail version. if you get three extra flights or three extra missions for $2.95 apiece, you can paint your new planes to make them even more awesome. (free skins are included at the start of the game to hook you up.)
in addition to the jets, there are currently eight additional multiplayer missions and several achievements, all of which could’ve been included in the base version of the game. hopefully, the patch ubisoft plans on releasing to fix several of the basic kinks will include more goodies.
