Ludacris, Release Therapy Full Album Zip
The rest of Ludacris’ career is a profusion of polished pop tricks aiming for the head and the crotch in equal measure. The 2005 debut All Eyez on Me was an album built on the falsetto of his voice, the beat from DJ Drama’s So So Def and the buzzing synth of Timbaland. The album’s single Are You That Somebody? was a high-energy pop jam that became the first in a long line of Luda/Shaquille jokes. In 2008, Ludacris made his feature film debut in a tiny role as a winking, shrugging drug dealer in The Other Guys, while his follow-up Battle Of The Year was an underfunded muddled mess of a salute to football. And even his later records, notably the 2009 Soul Plane and the mismanaged 2011 Deuce, were endlessly talked about how good they were. With his first major album in a decade, we can enjoy the half-decent retro-production and the patented back-wobbling spit while wondering whether this is the kind of step-back that marks the end of the best part of Luda’s career.
Release Therapy isn’t a bad album. But it’s not much of an improvement. As bad as Confessions Part II (which he preceded this year with Book of Ryan and The Area 51) is, at least that album had a clear vision. On Release Therapy, it’s the same incoherent carnival ride with a lyrical form that never changes: bratty, childish, arrogant music for a choleric man who’s never grown up.
The development of Ludacris into a humble, retiring rapper is a sad story. His career has often resembled a small local pop singer who’s bought a big house and spends more time renovating it than making records. On his late-’90s and early-’00s albums, he seemed to be building a new musical persona to complement his new schmaltzy public image. Instead, he just tapped a few tired, well-worn tricks and showed up a few million times better. Luda’s voice is a thunderous, coo-croaking gem, but he’s decided to mumble most of his lyrics, to the point where the occasional word can’t even be heard.
Prior to embarking on his journey to the top, Ludacris blew up as a member of Def Jam Records’ second generation. The ridiculously popular rapper burst out of Atlanta with the platinum-selling Back for the First Time, outselling the likes of Salt-N-Pepa and Vanilla Ice.
Ludacris: When Back for the First Time was big, I had Scott Storch [ed. note: Founder and producer of the Black Eyed Peas] as my beat maker; Storch got Back for the First Time and started mixing it and he played me the mixing. When he played me the mixing, it was harsh. I was like, This might not turn out, but I just did it, like, I was just in, we just went for it. He got to the point where it was very good and I was like, Im finally doing the right record for this. He found the world. He found a balance because he was producing and he had me on there, so its like, Im working with my mind and his. He did a great job.
Ludacris: Me and my wife, Gloria Estefan, made the decision that, when my career started to dip, we were going to get into music. We were going to put a band together and I was going to start back in the game. My boys in the game. I was like Im going to be going back in the gym because, man, I got a lot of old people on this planet. I got a lot of retired people on this planet. There’s a lot of old school people out there. There’s a lot of young kids out there with a lot of older people. You know what I’m saying? There’s a lot of old fools out there. And so we were like, Let’s go back and get those old fools pumped up.
