milky chance release their second album on february 5th 2019. the first single is called gravity, and it’s a pleasant, mellow pop song, although it’s not particularly original. the song was released in december, and already has been played on radio stations all over the world. however, the band has never encountered such a strong release response before.

milky chance is the artistic success of 2017. the 4-piece band – jesper hess, malin wadenius, nicholas bailey and markus wibekito – releases their first album in 10 years. the title says it all. sadnecessary is a mixture of sadness and necessary, although the double “necessary” is more of a fun side. the name “sadnecessary” is a reference to the hans zimmer’s movie lone ranger and the lyrics’ message. “lone ranger” has great melodies, that will certainly pull you out of your head and into the music. when you listen to the album, the lyrics will dance between pop and electronic music. while the band is quite successful in the studio, live, they are divided: malin and jesper (the vocalists) and markus and nicholas (the composers and the guitarists) write all the music, while nicholas bailey is responsible for the sound and markus wibekito handles the visuals. they have a simple idea: “a sequence of songs that speaks to you, as you feel it. a few hours of joy.” all the lyrics and melodies were written and set in their home country of sweden.

“it’s been a decade since we released our last album, and the last time was not exactly a happy one.” maybe it wasn’t a happy time, as the band members reflect back upon their existence. they have talked about numerous misfortunes and were a shadow of themselves, but now the band members are feeling the light of their lives again. 2013 is a bridge between a painful past and a much brighter future. but there’s also a little bitterness behind the happy atmosphere; the message of the album is the only thing that’s good in life and that you have to experience it before you have to worry about dying. “blow it out your ass” is the title song of the album and it’s only sung by jesper, who’s a reveller and has a great voice. malin’s vocals are soft and she’s a subtle singer, while nicholas’ song lyrics are more often than not sung by markus.

in 2015, the band followed up with their second full-length, blossom, which was also released on lichtdicht records. like their first album, the album is heavily propelled by electronic beats. while many of the songs are electronic in nature, the band did try to mix up the sound on some of their tracks, which include latin-flavored more to life, a gothic, gospel-flavored the whatev.
in their native germany, milky chance are considered to be indie pop-electronica, while in the u.k., they are marketed as dream pop. their sound has been called a cross between animal collective and belle and sebastian.
it should be pointed out that up to this point, there are no singles included on the albums. there is something to be said for the duo taking on some curveballs. they certainly aren’t the only ones to do this; a perfect example is, in 2011, the initially unplanned collaboration between snow patrol and afro celt sound system. regardless of whether the collaborative song with sultana was a good idea, the pair have crafted a beautiful track that is shown in the video below. in the “tape” below, the band performs “daydreaming” as it appears on the mind the moon album.
the working title for the album was dipstick, an important facet in their creative process, and a name reflective of the band’s diy mentality. rehbein and dausch took a number of months to write and create the sound of the album. the pair recorded most of the album themselves and worked as producers on the album. while there are references to “daydreaming” in many of the songs, the band also likes to reference real or fictional celebrities, a trend that continues in the lead single, daydreaming. in the track, the band plays off the recent presidential campaign of hillary clinton. as hillary acknowledged in the song, she has been battling with her supporters.
