all of the kids have their own odd gifts, and all but the youngest are terrified of their duties, but the film works on the basis that the audience will be invested in them anyway. its a movie about children, but it doesnt feel like one. but it is a highly entertaining one. miss peregrines home for peculiar childrenis a riveting, genuinely suspenseful thriller that packs a punch.
when the adolescent jake (the bud cort-ish asa butterfield) was a boy, his grandfather abe (terence stamp) told him bedtime stories of an island off the coast of wales. there, during wwii, abe stayed at a boarding house with mutant children under the care of one miss peregrine (eva green)a victorian beauty with cleopatra eyes, blue-black hair, and a dark gown with puffy slashed sleeves.
for a burton movie theres a surprising lack of action, with only one major fight. instead, the film is a series of narratives told through flashbacks, ranging from the early 20th century to the present, with a few points in between. the first is barron, the wight obsessed with miss peregrine. the second is jake, one of miss peregrines peculiar children, who has his own version of the wights story, in which the childrens true home is an abandoned childrens hospital on the island.
and on the island, its up to miss peregrines peculiar children and jake to stop wights and any other monsters from stealing their eyes, and find out what happened to their parents. the story unfolds in the best way possible: through the childs eyes, and sometimes through his perspective, theres little danger of feeling overwhelmed by the story, and theres enough new information about the peculiars and the wights for the audience to keep up with whats going on. theyre a bit like the avengers, in that it seems as if everything thats going on is connected, and theres a lot of new, unique things for the curious to learn about in the peculiar childrens world, including a fair bit of backstory about their parents.
