the lauterbach is a short, sand- and pebble-bed, steeply graded river, cutting deeply into the lower granite margin of the mainz basin (fig. 1). the lauterbach feeds the confluence with the sauer (right) and receives the outflow of the pöllbach tributary via the dalheimer kanal, terminating in the confines of the old free city of mainz. the whole catchment area was regulated by mainz flood controls. the lauterbach is a perennial stream with average discharge of ca. 20 m3/s. its low energy flow (about 16 m3/s) and limited vegetation is partially a consequence of construction works in the urban catchment area. the uppermost 90 m of the stream are predominantly covered by woodland, characterized by deciduous trees, such as poplars and beeches. the intermediate zone shows intermittent patches of shrubs, including spruce, pine and fir. in lowland areas, mainly along the dalheimer kanal, and in riparian corridors, the vegetation is dominated by grasses, rushes and herbaceous plants. the riverbed is exposed to floodwater for a period of about 1 month. after this the siltation is slowly moved downstream and the sand is removed from the bed by the sediment transport within the stream, thus creating the sandy riffle pools. the physical characteristics of the sampled section, i.e. the meandering shape, the sandy riverbed and the shallow, turbulent water, are representative of the site. during the high water periods, this portion of the river is turbid and only slightly flocculent, whereas in the low water periods the river bed is almost free of suspended sediment, leading to a clear water appearance. the lowermost 10 m are occupied by silt and sand beaches with wave cut platforms. the tidal influence causes a change in these compositions to a higher contribution of gravels. the time of low water corresponds to the time of high discharge of the pöllbach and dalheimer kanal, which are part of the mainz catchment area. the time of high water is representative of the time of low discharge of these two rivers.
