This book is a brilliant read. If you have an interest in the history of Africa, and in particular the cultures of the Nile Valley, this book is a must read. It is amazing how far we have come from the time when Africans were considered subhumans by the Victorians, to the present time when Africans are beaming back the achievements of the past and simultaneously rejoicing in the fact that they are the heirs to a rich and bountiful world. It is also amazing how racist our history books have been in these matters. For example, an Egyptian author (Sterling Rowley) wrote a book about the Pyramids which indicates that it was the old ancestor gods of the pyramids and not the pharaohs who built them. Another author (Nubian) wrote a book in which he stated in as much as as possible that he did not seek to blame blacks for the slave trade, but rather the British for their own past actions. And again, the blacks could not do anything if it was not for their past and present oppressors.
Any one who is interested in the historical development of the peoples of the Nile Valley and the lands south of Egypt is encouraged to read this book. Dr. Browder has produced a compreheninve and informative book which should serve to stimulate the minds of many students of African history in the west and elsewhere. The value of the book lies in the example of self restraint and analysis with which the author has dispelled some myths about these cultures. Browder’s work is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the rich civilizations of Africa.
The reviewer does not bother to point out that the people of the Nile Valley are the indigenous inhabitants of the land and not the diversified people which he would like to claim they were. This is a well-written book which makes a variety of interesting observations about the origins and development of the cultures of the Nile Valley. It is rare to find an author who writes clearly, clearly and well and who also makes a variety of interesting observations. Dr. Browder writes well, very well.
