POPDump is a command line tool to retrieve e-mail from a POP3 mailbox. A simple GUI for POP3 mailboxes is provided so you don’t have to build your own UI.
After you have installed PopDump, the application starts. The application will prompt you for your e-mail credentials and it will then start to retrieve the e-mail messages from the given account. If you don’t have any e-mail, you will be notified with a message.

The application accepts several command line parameters that can be used to configure the retrieval of the e-mail messages and the e-mail message properties.

The command line parameters are as follows:

popdump.exe -dump=eml -DumpAll=Yes -Delocate=yes

The application retrieves all e-mail messages that are stored on the server and if required, this happens synchronously.

Retrieving the mail messages in batches can be beneficial if you have lots of messages to be retrieved and don’t want to wait all messages to be retrieved on a single run. The application supports that by accepting the -Batch parameter.

PopDump supports command line parameters used to add a label to your e-mail messages. These labels are automatically added to the e-mail messages as first line of the message body. The command line parameter for that is -DocLabel.

The application has several settings that can be changed in the GUI that will apply the settings to all the command line parameters that the application will use.

The first is the path to the settings file. The settings file has the format:

\\settings.ini

This file is read as a settings file in the GUI. The settings file will be merged with the settings from the GUI and can have settings that are defined in the GUI and settings that are defined on the command line.

The main settings file will be the key settings to the GUI and the application will use that as base for all the settings that it applies. The settings for POPDump will be defined in the settings file that is called from the GUI. This means that you can make changes in the GUI that apply to the POPDump.

The following samples show the settings file that is used by the GUI and the ones that are defined in

* POP dump can contain metadata which allows more detailed information. A nice addition is the possibility to dump MIME headers which are optionally embedded in the mail messages.
* POP dump allows the retrieval of mail messages that are deleted in the mail box.
* POP dump allows the retrieval of mail messages that are older than the current time specified by the parameter.

POPDump

———
POPDump is a small console application that will retrieves all e-mail messages from a POP3 mailbox and dumps them as EML files. E-mail messages are retrieved in a simple plain text format with a line-based format, any header lines will be stripped from the messages. It does not ensure that any attachments are included in the EML files, but it tries to recover e-mail messages that have been received as MSG files. It has to be pointed out that it only recovers messages that have been sent from your mail server. It does not include any metadata (subject, from, date) about any message.
Quick start:
———
– Open a console and enter the POPDump.exe followed by the name of your POP3 mailbox (see below for more information).
– The program will try to recover the mailbox and dump the e-mail messages as EML files.
– Be patient while the program recovers the messages (up to 10 minutes on Win2003), and the you will get a text output window with the e-mail messages.
– The program will not open any e-mail message after it has been retrieved.
– You can quit the application with Ctrl+C. The POPDump will quit as well.
– The program will write the path (with the name of the POP3 mailbox) of all the retrieved e-mail messages to the console.
– If there are no e-mail messages in the mailbox (shown as a set of lines with a ‘*’), it will just dump a empty message to the console.
Input options:
————–
– The program will try to use the OLE2 decode to decode the E-mail messages.
– By default, the POPDump will only retrieve messages that have been sent from your mail server.
– You can enter a regex (regular expression) to choose the messages that are wanted by the POPDump. The program will retrieve all messages that match to this regex. The regex can be entered as an string, or entered as a set of patterns separated by . (see below for more information).
– The program will request your permission before downloading attachments.
– You can choose between the saving the messages as MSG (traditional format) or saving the messages as EML with the headers in a line-based format. See below for more information.
– It will use

What’s New In POPDump?

Copyright 2005, Dave Hansen
EML files created by POPDump are compatible with many e-mail clients.
POPDump now includes the option to follow all filters in a mail box by using the
–follow-filters command-line switch. This can assist users in validating and
rejecting messages by using these filters. E.g. it is currently the case that
POPDump does not follow.pst files in a mailbox.
POPDump is originally a command line tool. Currently it can be used interactively
either by entering your e-mail account information at the prompt, or by
specifying the command-line options at the command line.
POPDump is written in C with heavy use of Unix pipe system calls.
