Is it possible to use the “increment and attach” method of std::list without deallocating the node?

I’m using std::list and the “increment and attach” method to add data to the list. The node I am adding to the list is subsequently destroyed after the list is finished using the list::remove method.
std::list list;

list.push_back(“hello”);
list.push_back(“bye”);

std::list::iterator it;
it = list.begin();

// No need to deallocate the node if the list was “increment and attach”.
list.remove(it);

However, if list.remove(it); is not used, the node is destroyed and the destructor for std::string calls delete [] on the string “hello”. Is it possible to use the “increment and attach” method without deallocating the node?

A:

Sure you can. The second argument to the method is a list iterator (the first one being a pointer to the head of the list). Simply check whether it is a valid iterator, if it isn’t, check whether the node still exist. If it doesn’t, you can indeed delete the string.

Q:

Is “on fire” a proper usage?

After I read a web article, “Fire. How to put it out,” I wanted to check to see if the
