he could have called it rae and the wu-tangs greatest hits and the crowd would still have gone crazy. but the album is about more than the moments that produced it. it chronicles the birth of a dynasty. it tracks the unraveling of the wu-tang clan, from the spring of 1991, when rza began to champion a old-school, stripped-down approach to rap, to the fall of 1994, when rae and his crew hosted the original wu-tang summit in the bowels of the ymca in their hometown of staten island, and to the album that sprang from that summit, only built 4 cuban linx. the book was surprisingly readable. its peppered with raekwons brilliant turns of phrase, a couple of which ive quoted above, like when he says, i learned that along the way by sippin cristal, thinkin castro, and keepin it dre, stayin true to who i am. its funny, though. it seems to be written by someone who didnt know why they were making the album, by a man who didnt know the album was important to him.
the album didnt come out until 1996, and few people know about it. raekwon is cagey about the details, like when he talks about the rapport he had with a frustrated producer named 9th wonder in cleveland and a city-wide internist thats studying the doctoring of the soul. but over a decade later, it remains as true to life as its creator remembers it.
fans of the group would feel that wu-tang grew in the early albums as they experimented with their sound. one track in particular of note would be the mellow, country influenced “c.r.e.a.m.”, which is a conceptually textural, personal ode to the man in the red hat.
for all that, the suspenseful title alone will surely delight longtime fans, as will the book, which is chock full of stories about the magic that occurs when the wu come to the studio. you can pre-order from staircase to stage at amazon for $24.95.
having experienced a major decline in his career after the success of the wu-tang clan albums, raekwon received an ultimatum from the members of the wu-tang clan, who said they were going to quit unless he delivered them another solo album that was his best work. raekwon was hesitant to work with any of the producers that had worked on the wusc albums, fearing that they would try to mold him into a different style. in december 1995, raekwon attended a party and had a severe panic attack. he recovered, but knew that he needed to find a home for his solo album. while trying to find an independent record label that would offer him a solo deal, raekwon learned of the five percent nation and its interest in signing the wu-tang clan. this led to a meeting between raekwon and the clan who told him to sign with interscope. raekwon agreed to do so but was still skeptical, telling nme magazine: we werent really sure what to expect. when we went to the studio to make the album, we were really surprised to find that they were really interested in the album. theres no doubt they were right. the album is the best thing ive done, but its not perfect. there are things i would change but it still sounds like a wu-tang album. its one of the best ones youll ever hear. maybe ill never make another one.
